Are Ireland’s Cycle Lanes a Waste of Money, and Could Pub Breathalysers Encourage More Drinking?

Are taxpayers being taken for a ride with Ireland’s growing network of cycle lanes? And could a new road safety initiative actually encourage people to drink more?

In this episode, Niall is joined by journalist Laura Perrins to discuss the millions being spent on cycle lanes across Ireland. Are some of these lanes unnecessary, causing traffic chaos, frustrating motorists and leaving perfectly good roads reduced to bottlenecks? Or are they a worthwhile investment that makes our roads safer and encourages more people to get on their bikes?

PLUS: Breathalysers in pubs and hotels!

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is proposing breathalyser terminals in pubs and hotels, allowing customers to check their alcohol levels before deciding whether to drive.

It sounds sensible, but could it backfire? The Social Democrats have raised concerns that customers who discover they’re under the legal limit might decide to have another pint!

Would breathalysers help save lives, or could they give drinkers a false sense of security and encourage them to push their luck?

Niall and Laura tackle both controversial issues, and listeners have their say on whether we’re spending taxpayers’ money wisely and whether breathalysers belong in our pubs.
