#917 No Bangers, No Bonfires, No Bloody Fun!
Niall Boylan
Halloween Spoilsports! Are Politicians Taking All the Fun Out of Halloween?
Are Ireland’s politicians turning into the Halloween fun police? Or have bonfires and fireworks become too dangerous to ignore?
In this episode, Niall talks to callers about growing calls for a crackdown on traditional Halloween celebrations.
Fine Gael TD Naoise Ó Múirí has called for a zero tolerance approach to fireworks this Halloween, while councils are confiscating wood that teenagers have been collecting for bonfires.
But has Ireland become a nation of spoilsports?
For generations, Halloween meant gathering wood for weeks, building enormous bonfires, letting off a few bangers and enjoying a bit of harmless mischief. Nobody needed a risk assessment or a health and safety officer standing beside the bonfire!
But times have changed. Dangerous fireworks, massive bonfires, antisocial behaviour and attacks on emergency services have raised serious concerns about public safety.
So where do we draw the line between protecting people and taking all the fun out of Halloween?
Are politicians right to clamp down, or are we wrapping the next generation in cotton wool and robbing them of the childhood traditions we all enjoyed?
Niall hears from callers on both sides, including those who remember the excitement of Halloween years ago and others who believe stricter enforcement is long overdue.
Should Ireland adopt zero tolerance for fireworks and bonfires, or should we stop being such killjoys and let people enjoy Halloween?
