Copying from the best would save money but not an issue in Irish Politics by Nuala Nolan
Dear Editor,
Danish CPR number (Det Centrale Personregister) is a lifelong identification number essential for living, working, and accessing services in Denmark. It serves as a national ID for taxation, banking, healthcare (yellow card), and public authority communication.
It is typically issued when registering residency for over three months. It gives Danes their vote automatically when they reach 18, and others when they get Danish citizenship in real time. It is mandatory to keep one’s permanent address updated.
It is the equivalent of the Irish Social Welfare PPS number. So there is no need for an Electoral Register, so there would be no need for the 31 local Authorities to have staff take up with upgrading the register. They could also link it up with Social Housing so that there would be no need for staff to be taken up with the revaluation of rents.
Why have not the Electoral Commission not come up with this suggestion? It would save the State a fortune, and we would all be sure of our right to Vote.
It does not take great talent to copy from the best, but it takes humility to see that others have a better way of doing things and follow suit.
Yours Sincerely,
Nuala Nolan
