Gardaí probing the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier have confiscated items from the residence of the primary suspect, Ian Bailey.

A squad of 10 officers, comprising detectives from Bantry and members of the Serious Crime Review Team from Dublin, initiated the search of Mr. Bailey’s rented ground floor flat on Barrack Street in Bantry on Friday morning.

Mr. Bailey passed away from a suspected heart attack last Sunday in Cork, and his remains were cremated in a private ceremony in Cork on Tuesday.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a French filmmaker, was murdered in 1996, and Mr. Bailey was identified as the chief suspect in the case.

As part of their investigation, the Gardaí seized numerous personal items from Mr. Bailey’s flat, including several notebooks containing his writings, his mobile phone, laptop, hard drives, memory sticks, and other electronic storage devices.

A Garda spokesperson stated, “As part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996, Gardaí conducted a search under warrant of a residential property in Bantry, County Cork earlier today.”

After separating from his partner of 30 years, Jules Thomas, in March 2021, Mr. Bailey had been residing in a flat in Glengarriff. In May 2019, he was convicted in absentia by a Paris court for the murder of Jules Thomas and was sentenced to 25 years.

The Gardaí opted not to take certain items deemed of no evidential value in their investigation, such as Mr. Bailey’s clothing, his extensive collection of CDs, and his wooden carvings.
